However, there are some problems that may come up during the life of your Volvo XC70. One of them includes problems with the heater.

What to Do if a Volvo XC70 Heater Stops Working

If you’re experiencing a problem with your Volvo XC70’s heater, it could be caused by many different reasons. It could be a result of not getting enough air flow or it could be due to a faulty circuit board. In this case, it would be necessary for you to get in touch with an expert who can diagnose and repair your vehicle’s issue as soon as possible.

However, if you would like to assess the damage yourself first, here are some possibilities as to why your XC70 heater stopped working:

1) A clogged heater core

One of the first things that you can do is to check the heater core. This component of your Volvo XC70 has a filter and a heating element. If there is something wrong with it, this could cause an issue with the heating system.

This is possible when a radiator rusts or when debris gets through a radiator and lodges itself in its core. In either case, you may have to refurbish your heater core or opt for straight-up replacement.

The easiest way to determine if this is the case is by looking at the engine compartment’s heater hose. If you notice any kind of buildup or debris, this means that there is probably a clogged heater core somewhere inside your vehicle.

2) A faulty thermostat valve

Another common reason why your Volvo XC70’s heater stops working is due to a faulty thermostat valve. This is the component that allows you to control the temperature of your vehicle’s engine.

If this is the case, it could be a result of rust or other corrosion on its heating element. In addition to that, there may also be a blockage in the core itself.

To fix this issue, you can opt for replacement of the thermostat valve or if you’re already done with repairs, it would be necessary for you to replace the whole heater core as well.

3) A choked cabin air filter

If you notice that your Volvo XC70’s heater is not working, it could be due to a clogged cabin air filter. This component has an important role in ensuring that the fresh air you inhale will be clean and free of pollutants, as well as making sure the heater stays accurate to the setting.

Locating the cabin air filter in your car is an easy feat. It is usually hidden in the glove box. Additionally, you can consult the owner’s manual or the internet to find out the exact location.

Once you’ve found it, take out the filter and check it is still in good condition. If there is a lot of dust and leaves in it, then you should replace it. You can get a replacement from your local parts store.

4) A low level of coolant and/or antifreeze

Another possible reason why your Volvo XC70’s heater stopped working is due to a low level of coolant and/or antifreeze. This is a common issue that occurs when the engine overheats.

This could be because the coolant has leaked or because there is no coolant at all. In either case, you will have to top up your coolant before the problem can be fixed. Additionally, if you’re noticing that your car’s air conditioner isn’t working as well, then it may be a result of not having enough coolant in it.

It is easy to fix low antifreeze; all you need is a funnel and a new coolant. After the car cools down, remove the radiator cap and put the funnel in the opening in the radiator. Pour in the new coolant until the reservoir is full.

Then, you need to grab the main coolant hose and pump the coolant to make sure that there are no air pockets. Afterwards, replace the cap on the radiator and start the car to check if the heat is on.

5) A leaky radiator

A leaking radiator can be caused by a cracked or damaged cooling system. This could also be due to a leaky hose or the overflow tube.

A leaky radiator can cause coolant to not reach your heater core, which might damage your engine, as the worst case scenario. To fix this issue, you will need to get a new one and replace all the parts inside it. It will be necessary for you to replace the fan as well because this is what allows your car’s engine to stay cool and prevent overheating from occurring.

6) Faulty HVAC controls

Another possible reason why your Volvo XC70’s heater stopped working is due to faulty HVAC controls. This means the buttons, knobs, or levels in your car may not be correctly triggering the proper temperature.

Cracked dials and bad touch screens could cause your heater to stop working. In this case, you will have to take it to a professional mechanic who can fix the issue as soon as possible.
